Use Emotion! Make your voice sound excited, angry, sad, or scared when the characters in the books are feeling those emotions.
Slow Down. There is often a tendency to read too quickly for children’s ears to understand. Avoid this. Time spent reading together is precious; there is no need to rush. Slowing down your reading will allow your kids to hear the nuances of your voice and savor the language.
Answer Questions. If your kids interrupt to ask a question about the plot or a new word, comment on the story, or make predictions, honor the request. Take a few minutes to discuss!
Use Different Voices. Invent different voices for each character or choose the silliest character and give him or her a funny-sounding voice. Kids love it!
