Tips For Reading Out Loud

Noah and Karen Reading by Jeremy Martin

  • Use Emotion!  Make your voice sound excited, angry, sad, or scared when the characters in the books are feeling those emotions.
  • Slow Down.  There is often a tendency to read too quickly for children’s ears to understand.  Avoid this.  Time spent reading together is precious; there is no need to rush.  Slowing down your reading will allow your kids to hear the nuances of your voice and savor the language.
  • Answer Questions.  If your kids interrupt to ask a question about the plot or a new word, comment on the story, or make predictions, honor the request.  Take a few minutes to discuss!
  • Use Different Voices.  Invent different voices for each character or choose the silliest character and give him or her a funny-sounding voice.  Kids love it!
  • Practice.  The more you practice, the better you will sound.  Here are some good books to practice your reading skills on:
    Dinner at the Panda Palace
    Horton Hatches the Egg
    17 Kings and 42 Elephants
